This Japanese magazine features some really nice shirt patterns as I mentioned in an earlier post, but there are more than just great shirts in this issue.
So far I have made a hat, blouse and a top, with plans to make some children's clothes for my little nieces, more shirts and a dress for myself at least. I find it is quite rare for these magazines to have so many patterns I want to make, I tend to scour the internet for images from a sewing book if I am considering buying it, and if I don't find a lot to like I won't take the risk. Pochée Vol 9 did not disappoint. Click here for a full review of Pochée Vol. 9 on JapaneseSewingBooks.com

The Hat

I could not have made my Sun Hat without the invaluable help of Yifarn from JapaneseSewingBooks.com who carefully translated the japanese instructions for me on how to make the hat, follow this link to read her post. I don't have very good pictures of the finished hat but here they are:

I can trim this hat with ribbon to match any outfit :)

Materials used: 1 pair ugly white twill pants (main fabric) + 1 horrid linen skirt (lining) + some old canvas to stiffen = new sunhat!
The Ruffle Blouse

Made from silk dupioni found at a thrift store, the blouse was carefully basted during construction to avoid as much trouble as possible. The fit is snug around the shoulders and it flares loosely out over the body. I can wear it with a belt although I sort of like the flared look too... The neckline and dangling ties are especially flattering. I would make this again from a fabric with a bit more drape I think, to avoid so much of the balloon look.. Otherwise I would narrow the fit and put in some darts.

The "Flounce" Top

I made this for my mother-in-law from silk and satin, the ribbon is pinned on so that it can be removed before washing. The silks were all washed before I sewed with them to shrink and soften them up.

Yay! It is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com at an attractive price, only $11.27. The publication date is Sept 10, 2012 so there is still quite a long wait for this title but fans of Japanese sewing books will know the wait is worthwhile. The title for the english version will be "Stylish Dress Book: Wear with Freedom". Click the link for more details and pictures!
I remember reading somewhere that the sewing patterns in the french books are sized a little different from the Japanese books - not bigger, but adapted to suit european body types.... Not sure if my info is correct here, but that would mean that the english version would also have those alterations and therefore the patterns would require less tweaks in order to fit right. Hope that's true, don't quote me on it! Here is the size chart, it goes from 6-16, please click the pictures to enlarge.
I have several books on tea and foods to make for taking tea, one of my favorites is The Afternoon Tea Book by Linda Hewitt, published in the early 80's, it is now quite the vintage classic! The recipe for Scottish Shortbread is the simplest I have ever seen, most call for cornflour in the recipe, this does not. 3 ingredients, and a delicious result, follow the link for recipe!
SCOTTISH SHORTBREAD (my extra notes in red)
Ingredients
1 cup sweet butter, softened (I used salted)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour (I only had a scant not-quite-2 cups, so i took back 1 tbs sugar and butter, although DH says they need a spot more sugar now....make sure to sift the flour, it's important)

Tools
Baking sheet, greased
Cake Racks (who has these?)
Cookie cutter (ditto..) or small sharp knife
Electric mixer and medium bowl
Fork
Measuring Cups and Spoons
Rolling Pin
Sifter (Sieve) and medium bowl
Wax Paper, two sheets, flour dusted

Method
Preheat Oven to 350ºF
Cream butter and sugar together until fluffy, then continue to beat at lower speed and gradually blend in the flour, beating until consistency is smooth.
Form dough into ball (do NOT handle this much or it will become tough!) and place between floured sides of wax paper and roll to 1/2" thickness.
Cut into desired shapes, then prick all over in an even pattern with fork tines. (I sprinkled with sugar)
Place 1" apart on baking sheet and bake in middle of oven until firm and lightly browned, about 25 minutes (mine were done before 25 mins was up)
<strike>Transfer to cake racks and cool completely </strike>(Flip onto countertop and begin eating as soon as cookies do not burn tongue...continue until all gone)
:-)
The recipe also says not to substitute another shortening for butter, since nothing else gives the shortbread the proper texture or taste. Personally I believe you should never substitute margarine for butter on your bread either, modern research has proven margarine to be very bad for you.

Anyway...I made this yesterday because it was a dreary rainy day and there was nothing in the pantry. I can tell you that this recipe has the approval of picky teenagers, cookie aficionados and fox terriers. It is light, crunchy and buttery without that heaviness you get with the shop-bought variety. So easy to make that it will be hard not to be making these every week.... bang goes the diet! I have no flour left however so that should put a stop to it for now. Sorry no pictures...all the product has been devoured.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-80240400005378485622012-02-26T21:51:00.000-08:002012-02-29T08:06:00.227-08:00Fashion Inspiration - Pochee

Today is one of those days where rest is involuntary... I am very tired and keep getting dizzy. It's not a good day for sewing. Plus I have a bad feeling about my half finished dress upstairs, that I did not cut that plaid fabric quite right and the seams will be wonky after all... But I am too tired to look and see, and I don't need that discouragement today. EDIT : I found out the plaid lines up just fine :-) but now I have to add darts to the back..

Instead I will share some fashion images and pictures from pattern books that I am in love with right now..
These are some designs I am finding very appealing right now, despite the loose baggy look which I am not so sure about. I love the details, the simple fabrics, the pintucks and little gathers, and the necklines and sleeves on all these tops.

That's all for now folks, I am looking in my stash for patterns to use to achieve something like this, my current favorite is the berry colored linen shirt. I have some diagrams and instructions for it that I found, but no exact pattern.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-52530763794453265732012-01-20T13:16:00.000-08:002012-01-20T20:09:22.518-08:002011 Review...2011 looks like a scant year for sewing if you go by my posts, but really it was just a bad year for posting...
I actually did a lot of repairs that made clothing wearable again, I did some embroidery and some garment sewing that is not photographed yet. It's so much easier to photograph an object like a stuffed rabbit than to photograph yourself wearing a dress, as you can see from my photos in the mirror on the Lotus dress! The solution is to obtain help but I'm not so good at asking for that. This must be why so many bloggers have photos of their frocks on hangers instead of on themselves.

Anyway, I thought I would make a list of all the things I did not post about but made or fixed =0)
so.....please click for more....

I made an "Afternoon Tea Top" by Ichigogirl on Burdastyle - free pattern of a strapless fitted top with ruffled trim. I made this a cross-back strapped top with ruffled satin trim in a lovely terracotta light cotton with little flowers.

I fixed a black sweatshirt fabric jacket with a busted zipper, I put in a new zipper and now wear it often as it has all-the-way long sleeves with crochet lacy trim ruffles and a hood and little pockets and it's super cute. It is quite a unique garment, I've really not seen anything else like it, it was given me by a friend in Seattle, very kind.

I fixed 3 pairs of my step-sons jeans with unwanted rips... this is a boy who does NOT like ripped jeans. It's got to be perfect for the prince ;-) ...so, I fix such things with care to ensure they show as little as possible. So far he is pleased, phew!

I fixed 2 pairs of my husband's jeans that were in tatters with unwearable rips. He quite likes rips and patches but not there are more holes than pants left to the garment, so...I put on patches underneath and lots of reinforcement of extra denim and some embroidery for fun.

I fixed 2 pairs of my jeans (as above) but then the one I put the most work into with hours of Japanese asanoha sashiko pattern embroidery tore again in the rump and I put on too much weight to squeeze into them too :-( bah! I need a diet...

I darned two shirts...that now need more attention....double bah!

I patched and darned a beautiful vintage shirt for my husband, must get picture...

Can't remember any more, but if I do I shall add them and then hopefully later post pictures of all these random forgotten projects.
All the little tea pots and tea cups have been sewn around and flowers have been carefully stitched so that they are not stitched too much...for I quickly found out that too much detail makes the quilt too flat and hard.
I photographed the quilt this morning with the sun at the perfect angle to show all those little details (so long as you turn off the flash). Click the link for more detailed pictures!

I have discovered that quilting takes a long time and makes your arms ache. At first the freehand stitching foot (is that what it's called?) was just impossible for me to use, I kept making a mess. So I attacked all the easier parts of the quilting first - the straight lines. I did "stitch-in-the-ditch" for the whole thing, following the original plan that the quilt was never intended to be perfect, which is the only way it was ever going to get done! So my lines are wonky and go outside the "ditch" all the time. If this was a dress I would have ground my teeth and unpicked all my mistakes, but it's not.. Here's another picture to keep you interested:
After the lines were done I decided I would bind it before doing the teapot panels in order to make it as manageable as possible. My first two corners are horrible, the last two not so bad, the lines are wonky, I found out the back has one or two puckers..but it's done. Mum was right about that scary busy backing fabric, it hides all the trouble spots!

When I finally got to the teapots I did better with the freehand stitching foot, not perfect, better. Some places actually look really nice, then I got all excited that I was an awesome stitcher, lost concentration and messed it up... typical.

This pic gives a pretty good idea of the fit, I don't have good full-length pics yet and anyway the hem isn't finished. My brother-in-law suggested I add some lace too which I may well do. I'm glad I moved those belt loops, they are just right and I can tie a bow at the small of my back which looks nice and keeps the lines clean in front.

Everyone loves the sleeves so I am glad I made this version, they could even be bigger and longer for my taste and maybe next time I will put elastic in to prevent pinching as they are still a little snug. The next dress I make from this pattern will be made in a gorgeous girly fabric Mum bought for me some time ago, and will hopefully go smoother now that I have made this practice run. I am giving some thought to leaving the sleeves off the next version as it will be very sweet anyway due to the pretty fabric. Not sure yet. I do know that if I make this in the tunic length it will be a nice dress length on me and I will leave off the belt this time, it should not need that added detail for interest due to the shorter length and patterned fabric.

I never did like the contrast detailing on the cover of the pattern much, I have seen it done well once in my searches online, but the fabric choice must be so carefully made, and I do not care for most of the combinations I have seen, including Amy Butler's own version.

Anyway, I hope to follow this post with more pictures of the fully hemmed and completed dress!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-17270065663257011682011-04-19T19:24:00.000-07:002011-04-19T19:24:32.967-07:00Quilt Assembly

Assembled and ready to Quilt!

This is going to be a beautiful quilt ... While my Mum and Dad were visiting recently Mum decided to piece a quilt with me helping on the design a bit. She showed me how to stretch out the backing while repairing another quilt she made me years ago, so I assembled the "quilt sandwich" this weekend. Now for the quilting!

So I am currently up 3 1/2 quilts after Mum and Dad's visit, one gorgeous one Mum brought with her as a gift, two she repaired, and this one I get to quilt myself. Phew! Thanks Mum!
This is the muslin, made from an old sheet, as the dress fabric Mum bought me was very nice and expensive so I am trying to adjust the pattern first.

The pattern is a bit on the big side I think, plenty of ease. I cut the small size thinking I may have to let it out over the hips and it is actually pretty big. Fortunately the fabric drapes pretty well so it feels good to have that extra room. Looks pretty good for a sheet, no?!

The front of the dress fits ok although a bit mishapen at the top of the bust...the back does not fit right at all due to my sway back and large butt! Bunny is made from a banana hued multi colored polka dot Japanese fabric, and some other chocolate colored fabric..silver/aqua satin for the inside of the ears, felt, some white fur cut off the tops of some socks, embroidery cotton and some matching pumpkin colored ribbon I grabbed off one of my shirts....perfect!
I made this drawstring bag for a friend's little daughter, as a gift bag for the soft toy that I also made for her a while back and then ...<ahem>.... didn't get around to sending...
Suddenly last week I realized that the little girl's birthday was right around the corner and she didn't have her bunny yet! For a while I wrung my hands and whimpered to myself about how I would never get it together in time and would miss her birthday again (yes, again...oh shame on me!) Then I got ahold of myself and decided to make this carrying sack/gift bag to complete her gift and get it in the mail!! Very daring and ambitious for me let me tell you, I am a terrible procrastinator....horrible, just horrible.....
These pictures were taken the morning I finished it all and threw it in the mailing box. Not much finesse there but I did manage to stuff in a bit of pink tissue paper.

drawstrings tied, showing the chocolate colored
bobble ends on the strings with little stitched "x"

This drawstring bag was designed after the Japanese style, with two contrasting panels of fabric, the solid color acting as the perfect foil to set off the pretty discrete floral pattern, and some girly lace and a button for good measure. The drawstrings were made from the same fabric as the carrying handle, and then finished with padded "bobbles", again in the Japanese style. The carrying handle is stitched on at one side but attached with a buttonhole on the other. This design meant that the handle could be detached at one side and stuffed into the bag but it wouldn't get lost; and it also meant I got to try out the buttonhole foot for the first time! Wow, so easy! What a super machine I have....thanks Mum! In case anyone's interested, it's a Brother PC-210, and it's great!

That pretty floral fabric has some little blue flowers and so I decided to make them pop a bit by threading some blue gingham ribbon through the lace, and adding a touch of light blue embroidery thread - to sew on the button and stitch an "x" on the bottom of each "bobble" at the end of the drawstrings. Just a little blue really freshened up all that brown, because blue and brown like each other very much! I wasn't too sure of the orangey/caramel handle and strings but I think it's ok, there is an ochre/orangey flower on that floral calico too.

Ah..I didn't mention the lining, it's the same caramel orange fabric (from a re-purposed shirt) with a row of pretty blue machine embroidery at the same level as the lace on the outside. And if you look closely, you can see where I naffed it up and couldn't be bothered to unpick and do it again! Yes....one side of the embroidery is upside down. I'm sure the recipient will not care, I didn't!

So......anyone want one?? Place your orders now folks! Do you like it with the handle? Better without? Opinions please!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-3276133938138409182010-09-02T20:47:00.000-07:002010-09-02T20:56:35.188-07:00The Tea-Rose purse and drawstring bag

The Tea-Rose purse and bag

Here's a sweet little purse I made a while ago, based on a free pattern available at Belle Epoque. I made this purse smaller than the original pattern by folding over areas of the pattern print-out before cutting out. Then I dressed the project up with some pretty details. I used a tutorial on Tea Rose Home for the flower, on the tutorial page it is used to adorn a ruffle shirt, but I liked the style with the "tails" hanging down as if they tie the flower on, so I used it for the bag. I also stiffened the bag with some batting I bought when pondering on a quilt project a while back. I didn't make the quilt but I have lots of batting now to make fun stuff with!

This little project is quite elaborate, there are many more fancy details that went into making it fab. Follow the link to see...

I named this the Tea-Rose purse because of the amazing teapot fabric, the flower, and rose colors used (not because I used 2 tutorials from Tea Rose Home, but it is a wonderful blog!) I carefully cut the teapot fabric so that 2 big teapots appeared on each side at the bottom of the bag, couldn't have any teapots cut in half! Similarly the printed rope trim on the fabric had to be positioned just right so it went all the way around and plenty of little teapots and teacups appeared above it. The rope trim also had to line up on each side. Many thanks to my dear sister in law for giving me her fabric stash! Most of my projects are made from fabrics she gave me, including this one.

Lace trim is inserted on each side of the bag just under the bias tape at the top, this was tricky to do since it involved using lace that was cut in half lengthways and there was not much to catch in with the sewing machine...some re-sewing was required there!

Covered buttons were called for in order to make a bag closure, since I wasn't about to go buy any purse hardware, I am way too cheap for that! Instead I matched up the patterns on the mini teapots with other areas of the remaining fabric, cut little circles, stretched it over the buttons and stitched it down. No button covering devices were used... no one's going to see the mess at the back, are they? Anyway, then some of the bias tape had to be sewn into a tube and elastic inserted through it, the resulting stretchy pink loop was then stitched under one button on one side of the bag, and looped over the other button at the other side. Simple cheapskates bag closure!

I also put a little pocket on the inside, and I should mention that this project involved making my own bias tape without the help of a bias tape maker. Yikes! I used this tutorial to make the bias tape.

The matching drawstring bag accessory with satin lining and strings is made in the same way as my previous little baggie creation, click here to see that. The satin is a lovely color, a very soft pale aqua. Many thanks to Mum to sent me all my satins and silks!

This purse is now the property of a darling little girl who likes Tea Parties. Just as it should be!

So far I think it is ok although the face still needs work, I want that little nose to be more pronounced, with a nice curve in the face that I haven't quite got yet. The darts in the ears were supposed to make them stick up a bit but they really don't, although the shaping is nice, perhaps I will try some interfacing in the next test to see if sticky-up-ears look better. It's actually quite nice the way they droop and frame the face like long girl hair. The feedback so far is that the details like the finger really make it look great, and that the face should be really simple, just a couple of circles for the eyes. The same person commented that they like the plain fabric better than the patterned I used last time too...however that will not do for me, plain may be fine for some but I think the flowery rabbits are much more fun!

I will post again when the face is completed.
Then follow the links for a total of 12 chances to win groovy new organic fabrics. I entered comments on all the links today and so maybe I will win? My plan is to make loads of re-usable grocery bags so I can avoid having to use plastic bags from now on.

I used to think paper bags were bad enough - all those trees being cut down and wasted to make paper bags, but then I found out that plastic bags are way worse! They are totally non-degradable and so the plastic bag trash in our landfills lasts forever, and grows and grows... Then along come birds and rabbits and such wildlife that play and search for food in our garbage dumps, and they get tangled up in the plastic, hurt and even killed by the debris, they even eat it and it can really harm them. So it's a very bad thing. I've been meaning to make some bags for a while and that's what I'm going to do if I win some fabrics.

We re-use those plastic bags for trash bags too so I will have to figure out what else we can use, I know we can't afford to buy trash bags...

Why organic cotton? I have read about this today and it really is a good thing, according to Katherine Hamnett's site, conventionally produced cotton represents 10% of world agriculture but uses a whopping 25% of the world's pesticides! For more about that from Ms Hamnett, click here

One last thing, I need to find a great pattern for a useful sized grocery bag, or maybe I will design my own, any help in that area appreciated! I will post links for great patterns if I find them.
The pattern idea is from some nice bags I saw on etsy....by a Japanese lady of course! I liked the idea of the drawstring enclosure being made from a separate, contrasting fabric. The resulting bag is actually reversible and lined with satin, but this side looks best. =0)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-15926401383559301132010-04-19T20:49:00.000-07:002010-04-19T20:55:49.596-07:00Is this a Chrysanthemum Ball?

I made a toy/puzzle ball that I first saw on a cover of "Quilts Japan" magazine over at superbuzzy.. I looked all over for a pattern for it and then a tutorial showed up on craftgossip here, which I followed...with some modifications.

I made my own pattern using a CD to draw around for the curves, as I wanted it considerably smaller than the tutorial made for. The result is about 4.5" in diameter, which is still a bit bigger than I would like. I am planning to make more, mostly smaller, and then string them together with ribbons and beads to make a kind of decorative hanging, um....."thing". Can't think of what to call it. Anyway, when I have made more I shall post!

I'm pretty sure this is originally a traditional Japanese design, and may possibly have been called a "Chysanthemum Ball" ...maybe after one of their traditional geometric designs. If anyone has any more info on the origin of this design please tell me! I would love to know more, I find this pattern very fascinating. The ball was time consuming to make but totally worth it. It's not something you would make to sell, you could never recoup your costs in time, but for a gift it would be very special.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-44755651278789159882010-04-12T13:54:00.000-07:002010-04-12T14:12:40.463-07:00Something to make you smile..

I was just commenting on Stitch&Bake that there is nothing like a snoozing furry to adorn a quilt (visit that link to see why)...and then I thought of this picture. This is not even a quilt, just some cheap old bedclothes, but notice how snuggly and warm they suddenly appear when one has the family pet pose on them.. Nothing quite like it is there? Heck, that could be a bundle of greasy old rags she's laying on and it would look inviting!

Clearly this is how furnishings should really be sold, Macys should keep an army of sleepy pets in the furniture dept, they would sell beds and armchairs like crazy. Or maybe this is the best way to shop for furniture - take your pet to the store and buy the couch it curls up on....

Any thoughts?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-73546153627206256492010-04-05T00:55:00.000-07:002010-04-05T15:24:16.760-07:00A Bed Quilt - is this enough fabric??

I am thinking about making a quilt.

The more I think about it and the more I read about quilting the more I realize what a serious thing it is to think about making a quilt! I am practically paralyzed with terror in fact!!

So much so that I have needed to simplify this process by choosing the easiest design and breaking down the rest of my anxieties into key questions. In my quest for the right design I have looked at lots of lovely quilts on the internet and I have to say I am most attracted to simple patterns that feature lovely fabric combinations.

So I decided to do a quilt top made from squares and then to consider adding some applique after the top was about done - once I can see how it looks and where it might benefit from some more "action". The applique may or may not happen at all of course since I would like to get this done fairly quickly once I decide how to do it, otherwise I shall run out of enthusiasm y'know!

My ideas for the applique are pretty simple too - little squares inset into the bigger squares seems to be a pretty popular idea and I like it, so that's the plan. To choose the fabric combinations, I went to a super-cheap store and ran around holding the bolts up to each other for a while until I arrived at a shortlist of some super stuff, then I purchased small and varying amounts at random without reference to how much I needed (great plan huh?!?) so I have about a half yard of each choice, although I got a full yard of a couple of favorites.

When I got home and laid the fabric pieces out I threw in a couple yards of something I already had that works nicely with the colors and grabbed a too-big beige striped shirt out of the closet for just in case I need more. So far the project has cost about $20 total, which is all I plan to spend on it.
Here are the fabrics all laid out on a queen size bed...they do cover the area with a fair bit to spare.

Now for my anxieties:

Do I really have enough fabric for a full size bed quilt? (the batting is 81"x96")

How do I figure out what size my squares should be?

Can I get away with cutting the pieces with scissors? (I can't afford the cutter & mat)

Are the fabrics too feminine? (the quilt is for a teen boy, eek!)

Can I get away with mixing in some lightweight fabrics? (got 2 shirt-weight ones by mistake)

I want to quilt it with a Sashiko pattern..should I attempt this by machine or hand-quilt instead?

Can I get this done in 2 weeks? (a certain birthday fast approaching)

The bedsheet I have to back it with is blue, is that going to work??

Will Mummy be able to answer my questions tomorrow?!?!

Phew! That's enough stressing out for one night.
Now for some more close-ups of those super fabrics, yum!

I used the same ribbon as the trim that goes around near the edge and stitched it in white too so it would match. I didn't have much of the ribbon as it was given me so I had to make sure I saved enough of the ribbon to make bows by calculating how much I would need to trim each placemat and still save some for bows. The bows are not actually tied, they are made from two strips of ribbon, a long piece for the loops and tails and a smaller strip to wrap around the middle.

Each bow is about 1.5 inches long. So you'll need 4.5-5 inches for each one and then about 1 inch for wrapping each bow around the middle. Cut off the portion of ribbon that will be saved for the middle of each bow and set it aside.

On the length of ribbon for the loops of the bow, stitch little lines of stitches along each edge carefully so as to look like the stitches on the placemat trim.

Cut the stitched ribbon piece into sections for the bows, each about 4.5 - 5 inches (you're going to trim this a bit more, don't cut it too short).

On each section take the end, fold it in half widthways and then trim off a triangle of the ribbon so that it forms the classic inverted "V" ribbon end (this prevents fraying and looks pretty), do this for both ends.

Now we make the loops - fold the piece of stitched ribbon in 3 like a zigzag and even it up. Twist it once in the middle and then turning it so the loops face up and the tails face down, the picture shows this pinned to the back of a mat so you can see it better on the side with no pattern.

Cut about an inch of unstitched ribbon, hold it in half widthways, wrap it around the middle of your twisted "bow" so the ends are at the back, trim off any excess and pin the "bow" in place on the place mat so it will hold it's shape and keep that middle right where it is...yes, this is fiddly! I have little fingers....

position one side of the middle of that bow under the sewing machine needle and stitch little stitches along one edge of the middle and then the other, making sure to backstitch to secure and make it look sufficiently like the rest of the stitching for your satisfaction. If you can do this better by hand, go ahead.

Repeat for all the other bows!

(this shows the bow ready to stitch on)
Fabric Bows: 23 Creative Projects for Your Home
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6061711518450867078.post-39313946766657649932010-02-28T00:31:00.000-08:002010-02-28T14:53:30.710-08:00Kawaiiiiii!!!!!!!
Oh my god I have to share something right now.....I am totally losing my mind for Japanese prints right now - TOTALLY!!!!

They look super on the table (they now each have a bow on one corner too) and everyone likes them which is a major plus! Table mats may not seem very exciting to some, so I should explain why they are are important enough to me to get in the way of making cool stuff like stuffed bunnies... It's quite simple, I have frequent headaches, and a large glass topped dining room table on a tiled floor next to a huge window with not much soft furnishing to soak up the resounding "CLANG!!!" of plates and cups plonked onto it by the less sensitive members of the household. The noise bounces off the afore mentioned hard surfaces and amplifies into a brain mushing sensation when it hits my ears....I can't take it I tell you!!! Placemats it had to be, pronto!

But how? With no batting, no backing fabric...and no spare money to get such things even if I wanted to bother having to drive off somewhere to get them (which I don't...) Hmm. Here's what I used -

Batting - cut up one raggedy stained old bath towel I've been looking for an excuse to destroy

Backing Fabric - nasty old jeans! I don't care if the seams show on the back 'cuz they weren't quite wide enough, they're free!

Front Fabric - I am fortunate to have very nice relatives, this lovely fabric was a gift from my sister in law

Ribbon and Bows Trim - Thanks Mama!

That black and white leaf pattern fabric is just wonderful and reminds me of the many Japanese fabrics I have been admiring recently. However on reading the name of the print company on the remaining edge, it says "Cranston Print Works Company - Millworth Fabrics - USA". I found the Cranston website but this pattern seems to be discontinued, bah. I have saved a little bit of it for something else as I feel it deserves a more exciting project sometime. Maybe a stuffed kitty cat with a little white face and pink nose and big whiskers.....ooh! Watch this space!

Here's the back of the place mats so you can see how the cut-up jeans look crappy...hah! I liked that concentric circle design for the quilting....now if I could only sew a straight line...............

These lil' rabbits were SO much fun to make! Just look at those little faces! Adorable...and I am so proud because I embroidered and appliqued the faces myself to make them completely baby and child safe. From what I have read, if a toy is intended for a child of 3 or under there must be nothing on it that could possibly be chewed off and become a choking hazard. This means I could not use any beads or buttons for eyes or anything like that. The free pattern I used recommended "safety eyes", but I don't have the luxury of running out to buy anything I want and I am too impatient to hold up a project when something else I already have can be pressed into service, so I bought absolutely nothing for this as I had all the materials around the house. The pattern also called for me to buy pompoms but I got around that too.... So before I say more, I just want to say a big THANK YOU! to the person who posted this wonderful bunny doll pattern for free.

I haven't made a soft toy since I was a kid and my Mum bought me a couple of stuffed animal kits. They were delightful - a donkey and a tiger. They were all hand-sewn with Mummy's help and turned out very nicely. I have to say one thing about this pattern, it took me a whole lot longer than the 2 hour estimated craft time because I decided to protect all the raw edges of the pieces before sewing them together with overlock stitch, for longer lasting rabbit pals...then Mummy suggested clipping the curves on the seams before overlocking so rabbit 2 is just a little better made, but no less cute. The lighter rabbit was the first made, materials were found and scavenged as follows....

Satin for inner ears and soles of feet from the back of an old waistcoat

Velvet heart sewn on left breast from an old pullover top (washable)

Fun-fur, white..for bobbing bunny tails. Cut off the tops of a pair of snugly socks, still wearing socks!

Stuffing, some old foam cut up small, and a chopped up mohair-mix sweater for the finer areas, rabbit 2 stuffed with the insides of an old sofa cushion, perfect!

Ribbon, my Mum sent me lots of ribbon this Christmas, but I also save every bit I get on gifts and scavenge the closet for those hanging loops sewn into the sides of a lot of clothes...

Felt or T-shirt material for applique, eyes and noses..scavenged the closet!

Thread - various colored thread from a cheap sewing repair kit bought years ago

Needles for hand sewing & embroidery from same repair kit

The bows were tricky to tie at first as I wanted them nice and neat, but then I googled "how to tie a bow tie"...sorted! They can't be untied as I stitched them closed but they do revolve around the neck for different looks. One thing I really wanted for these soft toys was to make them really interesting for the children I made them for (2 little girls of course) both visually and texturally, hence the varying patterns and textures of the calico, satin, ribbon and velvet. Bunny 1 even has little "hands" - I stitched fingers after stuffing the arms, bunny 2 didn't seem to call for that, or the velvet heart, so I left it at doing a more elaborate face for #2. My plan is to make clothes for these dolls for the girls birthdays and such to keep their interest alive and make sure my investment in time pays off for a few years! Well I just hope they love 'em....else I shall want them back!!

Now for some more piccys! Yay! Must make one for me too...both these babies are spoken for!
