I used to think paper bags were bad enough - all those trees being cut down and wasted to make paper bags, but then I found out that plastic bags are way worse! They are totally non-degradable and so the plastic bag trash in our landfills lasts forever, and grows and grows... Then along come birds and rabbits and such wildlife that play and search for food in our garbage dumps, and they get tangled up in the plastic, hurt and even killed by the debris, they even eat it and it can really harm them. So it's a very bad thing. I've been meaning to make some bags for a while and that's what I'm going to do if I win some fabrics.
We re-use those plastic bags for trash bags too so I will have to figure out what else we can use, I know we can't afford to buy trash bags...
Why organic cotton? I have read about this today and it really is a good thing, according to Katherine Hamnett's site, conventionally produced cotton represents 10% of world agriculture but uses a whopping 25% of the world's pesticides! For more about that from Ms Hamnett, click here
One last thing, I need to find a great pattern for a useful sized grocery bag, or maybe I will design my own, any help in that area appreciated! I will post links for great patterns if I find them.
